Skin Care Routine Update

About a month ago, I posted a blog called “Starting a skin care routine + new beginnings” which shared my skin care plan for each day and what products I wanted to use. I chose a pretty basic routine to test in hopes to improve the state of my skin! Let me just start by saying I suck at routines and this just adds to the proof. But I am also very realistic, not everyone can stick to a perfect routine and sometimes I forgot to wash my face before bed. I knew I would miss a couple night routines – or all of them – but I didn’t beat myself up over that because I am always a work in progress. I am slowly getting into a routine where skin care comes naturally and through this process I have realized that I only need a couple staple products to keep my skin feeling clean.

I had super high hopes and expectations for myself when starting this routine, I was determined and ready. The first week was great but I fell off track way faster then I expected. I never leave myself enough time in the morning so doing a full skin care routine was last priority when it came to eating and showering. I was able to wash my face every day but that was it. I could say I tried hard but in reality, I got lazy. At night, I was so tired that I used make-up wipes to take my face off and that was it (try not to judge me too much, I know wipes are the worst). Instead of feeling guilty and defeated, I took baby steps. I added one product at a time and made my routine smaller to only have the “essentials” for me. The only products I focused on were:

  • Gel Cleanser
  • Exfoliator
  • Toner
  • Moisturizer

I’m sorry if this makes some of you skin care guru’s cringe, I AM WORKING ON IT! I am on the hunt for a good Vitamin C serum and oil cleanser (please help me). For now, this is actually really working for my skin. If I miss one day and don’t use these four things I really notice it. My face breaks out if I am not washing my face everyday and moisturizing after. Below I have a picture of the products I use:

The Cetaphil oil control cleanser really helps my face feel clean but I am still getting oily and shiny right away, which is why I am on the hunt for an oil cleanser. I don’t want to strip away the good oils that my face needs and I feel like Cetaphil can be too harsh on those natural oils. I have normal to oily skin, so I don’t need a serious cleanse that I think Cetaphil provides. But for my guys and gals with acne prone skin, this could be a life saver for you. The exfoliator I use is great and the only one I have ever used, which says a lot. Exfoliators scare me because I do not want to damage my skin. The microdelivery exfoliating face wash by Philosophy has small beads which are gentle, I use the lightest pressure to avoid damaging my skin but my face still feels smooth and looks brighter after using this. For moisturizer, my mom and I love The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Moisturizer (as you can tell, we got every last drop), it is super light but ultra-hydrating which for oily skin is a must. It has purified hyaluronic acid in it which helps with aging and hydration which is great for oily skin. I left the toner to last to discuss because it is newer. I have only been using it for about a week so I’m not sure if I like it or not. I use Thayers Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera. This has been great so far, it makes my face feel very soft which I love, I am just hoping my skin reacts well to it. We shall see!

Using these products, I have noticed a few changes in my skin. I had very oily and problematic skin before, but washing it everyday has helped keep my skin from breaking out as much. My skin also just feels and looks healthier, it’s brighter and smoother. I am going to be honest and say that my skin hasn’t gone through miraculous change but it feels better in general which makes me happy. You might be able to see in my pictures on social media that my skin was always very dull and colourless. But now, it looks like I am actually a normal and healthy human being! I am hoping to see more change in the future, but for now a before-and-after picture would have minor changes.

I am hoping to add more to my routine and find products that I can always go to. I am currently testing new products so I will keep you updated on those when I can actually have a good or bad opinion on them. If there is any products you want me to try, please let me know on Instagram at mercibysam.

Thank you for reading Merci.
