My Summer Skincare Routine

Thankfully the time we have all (or 50% of us) been waiting for is here… Summer.

Summer is here and that means it is time to CHANGE UP your skincare routine. The cold or dry weather routine must go, it’s time to welcome a new queen to the stage.

I have oily skin so I tend to keep my summer routine very simple and low maintenance. I try to avoid overdoing it with products since the air is more humid and my face will be like a glazed donut 24/7. I use most of the same products year round but customize each routine depending on the weather and what my skin needs most. So if you read my last skincare routine blog, you will notice a lot of the same products! (All products listed are linked.)

Note that I am not a professional and everything I share is based off of my skin, personal experiences, and research. Best thing to do for your skin is to seek a professional if you are needing help.

Morning Routine

The main goal of my morning routine is to ensure my skin stays hydrated and protected all day long. I also don’t want to spend more than 5 minutes on it! To start my morning routine, I rinse my face with warm water since I only wash my face at night. I have noticed a big change in how much oil my skin produces throughout the day when I wash my face before bed instead of in the morning.

After rinsing my face, I follow with these products in this order:

  1. Graydon Face Food Mineral Toner
  2. Versed Stroke of Brilliance Vitamin C Serum
  3. Farmacy Cheer Up Brightening Eye Cream
  4. Aloe Vera Gel (Lily of the Desert)
  5. Graydon Phyto Clear Cream
  6. Attitude SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen (yes… that is a sunscreen for babies…I’m also a child)

Side Note: The Graydon Phyto Clear is considered a retinol cream but I still use it with my Vitamin C serum in the morning since it is a “botanical retinol” and not a strong treatment serum. If this was a 1.0% (or more) retinol cream, I would never use it with my Vitamin C serum. The Graydon cream is a super gentle alternative that is more of a skin clearing cream and the Bakuchiol is super diluted. It wouldn’t have the same sensitizing effects that a strong retinol serum would have. If you’re using a retinol treatment or serum, make sure to keep your Vitamin C and Retinol in opposite routines to protect your skin!

Night Routine

My nighttime routine is also pretty simple and I use some of the same products. I really don’t think you need a completely separate routine for nighttime. If you have a handful of great products that work, stick to what helps your skin! I don’t use any anti-aging products yet, but I would 100% recommend using any anti-aging, clearing, or repairing products at night to work with your skins turnover and repair rhythms. Below is my current nighttime routine and as I add in treatment serums this list will grow a little (right now, the more simple the better for my oily skin):

  1. Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm (for when I am wearing makeup and need a double cleanse)
  2. Graydon Face Foam Cleanser
  3. Zyderma Clarifying Cream OR Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera (linked in morning routine)
  4. Farmacy Cheer Up Brightening Eye Cream (linked above)
  5. Kora Organics Noni Glow Sleeping Mask + a small drop of the Indie Lee Daily Vitamin Infusion Oil

For this routine, I use a lot of the same products but then add my HOLY GRAIL sleeping mask from Kora Organics. This overnight mask is beautiful and I wake up with the most amazing plump, glowing skin. I add one or two drops of the Indie Lee Vitamin Infusion Oil to hydrate my skin even more (mostly just when I feel like I need something extra). I use more oil in the winter when my skin needs more support with regulating oil production and water retention, but a little oil never hurt my skin! I truly believe that facial oils can be oily skins best friend and do wonders when you find the right one for you.

When my skin is really breaking out I swap the Aloe Vera for a clarifying cream from Zyderma which works wonders on annoying breakouts. I just buy the small sample and it lasts me about a month. I also LOVE to use my Rose Quartz Gua Sha at night and try to use it 2-3 times a week!
